Camden Peter says he’s very competitive and likes a challenge. So when his fifth-grade teacher Teresa Michalski challenged every student in her class to read 40 books throughout the school year, Camden said it was game on.

Before mushers and their dogsled teams start out on their nearly 1,000-mile Iditarod race through some of Alaska’s most brutal terrain, they’ll get some encouragement from Page Elementary students.

Thornapple Kellogg Schools were well represented with 11 teams at the regional Odyssey of the Mind competition in Wayland last weekend. The district will again be well represented by six teams advancing to the state finals March 14 hosted at TK Schools.

Philanthropy isn’t a word most fifth-graders use often. But it is a word they fully understand now and have practiced themselves with the help of the Circle of Giving project through the Barry Community Foundation’s Youth Advisory Council. “Philanthropy is giving people your time, talents and treasures to help other people,” said fifth-grader Collyn Genther.

Jacob Koster and his fifth-grade Page Elementary classmates have all been to the South Carolina Aquarium, Joshua Tree National Park and Lake Tahoe - all this year! It’s all thanks to technology and the ability to take virtual field trips via Skype and Google Chat around the country.

It took 22 rounds before Emersyn Gorman outlasted the other 17 contestants to win the Page Elementary Spelling Bee. Emersyn won by correctly spelling “stirrups” and then “Columbia.” Runner-up Exley Roon missed on the word “divan” in the 22nd round. Each fourth and fifth-grade classroom sent one representative to the school final competition. The final spelling bee was held in the Thornapple Kellogg High School auditorium where the rest of the Page students and family members gathered.

Abby Niemiec said "yes" to Ross Kammeraad's proposal of marriage in front of her fourth-grade class. Truth be told, the couple got engaged over the weekend, but they knew how important all the students were and decided to stage another proposal just for them!
